Oswald Pryor
Cartoonist Oswald Pryor was born at Moonta Mines in 1881 and began work in the mining company’s workshops as a teenager. Technical study led to drafting and management work, while drawing developed alongside his industrial career. His cartoons captured the characters and humour of the district’s Cornish mining community. Encouraged by writer C. J. Dennis, he developed an affectionate, observant style. Pryor knew the world he drew from the inside: its machinery, Methodist culture and people supplied material far richer than an outsider’s picturesque mining scene.
